Linus Pauling: A Centenary Exhibit

1970s

Orthomolecular Medicine - Vitamins
In his later years, Pauling moved from his mid-career research on the structural properties of organic molecules to the physiological effects of nutrients at the molecular level. He called this approach to health "orthomolecular medicine" - the right (ortho) molecule in the right amount.

The most familiar example of his thinking in this area is his recommendation of megadoses of vitamin C, but he was also one of the first to suggest that "optimal [molecular level] concentrations of substances normally present in the human body... might control or prevent mental disease."
