Excerpt from Linus Pauling's Diary - age 16 When Pauling was in high school, he found a slide rule in a field, and when no one advertised for it in the lost and found section of the newspaper, he kept it to take to college. He continued to use it for many years, and he had it with him when he made his discovery of the alpha helix in 1948.
